Mupumbu Primary School Project

During House Of Stone's 2004 visit to Zimbabwe, the principal of Mupumbu Primary School in the Zvimba District of Zimbabwe asked us to facilitate a "twinning" (pen-pal exchange) with a U.S. school.

Under the skilled guidance of librarian Jean Bolivar, the children and teachers of Bennett Elementary School in Bellevue, WA, have been exchanging pen pal letters with children and teachers from Mupumbu Primary School since 2005.

Zvimba Preschool Project
More than 5,000 orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) have been identified in the Zvimba District of Zimbabwe.  Many of these children are cared for by grandparents or older siblings whose economic productivity or access to education is thus limited.  Preschool programs provide early childhood education, meals and daytime care for the young children while reducing the burden of care for their families.

In 2003, House Of Stone was approached by the J.F.Kapnek Charitable Trust for funding of preschools in this region of Zimbabwe.  With House Of Stone support during 2003-2005, two preschools were built on the grounds of existing primary schools; women were recruited from the local community, trained in early childhood education and hired as preschool teachers; furnishings, books, and school supplies were purchased; and teacher salaries were paid.  The preschools now offer education, nutritious meals and daytime care for young children.  Oversight for construction, maintenance and administration was provided by locally based J.F.Kapnek Charitable Trust employees.  We were able to observe these schools functioning and were warmly welcomed during an unannounced visit in 2004.
